Understanding Comedogenic Ingredients: Your Guide to Acne-Safe Skincare

Navigating the world of skincare can be overwhelming, especially when trying to identify products that won't exacerbate acne-prone skin. One crucial aspect to consider is the presence of comedogenic ingredients—substances known to clog pores and potentially lead to breakouts.

What Does "Comedogenic" Mean?

The term "comedogenic" refers to the tendency of certain ingredients to block pores, leading to the formation of comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). While some ingredients are beneficial for dry or mature skin, they might not be suitable for those prone to acne. Also, just because a product is marketed as "clean" or "natural" does not automatically make it acne safe.

Common Comedogenic Ingredients to Watch Out For

Several ingredients commonly found in skincare and cosmetic products have been identified as comedogenic:

  • Coconut Oil: Deeply moisturizing but highly comedogenic—can trap bacteria and dead skin in the pores.

  • Shea Butter: Rich and nourishing, but too heavy for many acne-prone skin types.

  • Isopropyl Myristate: Often used for its silky feel, but it can significantly increase the risk of breakouts.

  • Algae Extracts: Nutrient-dense but can be highly pore-clogging, especially in sensitive or reactive skin types.

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): A harsh cleansing agent that can strip the skin and trigger inflammation.

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): A milder surfactant than SLS but still irritating and potentially disruptive to acne-prone skin.

  • Ethylhexyl Palmitate: A common emollient that gives products a smooth texture, but is known to clog pores in many users.

It's essential to note that individual reactions can vary. An ingredient that's comedogenic for one person might not affect another. However, if you're experiencing persistent breakouts, reviewing product ingredient lists can be a helpful step.

The level of comedogenicy is rated between 0-5 (0 being non-comedogenic and 5 being highly comedogenic.) All of our Acne Bootcampers receive a list of 81 ingredients rated as highly comedogenic. It's also important to note that there is no regulation when it comes to claiming that a product is non-comedogenic. There are many products on the market falsely claiming to be non-comedogenic.

Tips for Selecting Acne-Safe Products

  1. Read Ingredient Lists: Familiarize yourself with common comedogenic ingredients and check product labels accordingly.

  2. Patch Test New Products: Before applying a new product to your entire face, test it on a small area to monitor for reactions.

  3. Consult Professionals: Seek advice from skincare professionals (us!) who can provide personalized recommendations based on your skin type.

Why Product Formulation Matters

It's not just about individual ingredients—how a product is formulated can make a huge difference in whether it contributes to breakouts. Even products that contain potentially comedogenic ingredients might not clog pores if they're used in low concentrations or balanced with non-comedogenic companions.

Key Formulation Factors to Consider:

  • Ingredient Synergy: Some ingredients may only become problematic when combined with certain oils or thickeners.

  • Concentration Levels: A comedogenic ingredient listed last on an ingredient deck may be present in very small, less harmful amounts.

  • Base & Delivery System: How a product is absorbed—whether it's a cream, gel, serum, or oil—can impact how it behaves on your skin.

This is why simply avoiding one ingredient isn't always enough—you need a holistic view of the formulation. That’s exactly what we consider when curating our Acne Safe collection—products thoughtfully selected not just for what’s inside, but for how they work together to support clear, healthy skin.

Remember, achieving clear skin is a journey, and choosing the right products is a significant step toward that goal.
