Not All Mandelic Acid Is Created Equal: Here’s Why

Not all skincare ingredients are created equally, even when the label says they’re the same thing. Mandelic acid for acne is one of the best examples of this.

If you’ve ever used a mandelic acid serum and felt like it was too harsh, inconsistent, or just not giving you results, there’s a good chance the issue wasn’t mandelic acid, but instead the form of it.

What is chirally correct skincare?

Certain skincare ingredients, like mandelic acid, exist in two forms that are mirror images of each other. Think of it like your left and right hand: they look similar, but they function differently.

These are called:

  • L-mandelic acid

  • D-mandelic acid

"L" refers to a "left spinning" molecule and "D" refers to a "right-spinning" molecule.

The receptors in your skin are naturally "left spinning", so introducing a molecule that is also "left spinning" means that your skin is able to recognize and utilize this molecule more quickly and effectively. This "left spinning" molecule is also referred to as being "chirally correct."

Non-chirally correct mandelic acid (also called a racemic mixture) contains both forms.

Why chirally correct mandelic acid is better for acne

If you have acne-prone skin, your skin is already more sensitive and reactive. Using non-chirally correct mandelic acid can increase irritation, disrupt your skin barrier, and trigger inflammation, which all can lead to more breakouts.

Chirally correct L-mandelic acid, on the other hand, is more gentle on the skin, better absorbed, more predictable in results, and ideal for acne-prone and sensitive skin.

This is why choosing the best mandelic acid for acne comes down to more than just the percentage; it’s about the form.

Why I recommend Face Reality L-Mandelic Serum

When it comes to acne-safe skincare, I don’t guess. I look at results and formulation.

Face Reality Skincare uses chirally correct L-mandelic acid which makes a huge difference in how the skin responds. This serum is designed specifically for acne-prone skin and supports consistent, long-term clearing.

And in all honesty (and my opinion) these other brands are jumping on the Mandelic train because of Face Reality’s Mandelic Serum. They’ve seen the results and popularity and are trying to implement it into their brands as well, which I can’t knock them for. But Face Reality was the brand that started its popularity.

What about other mandelic acid products?

Many products on the market like those from Reale Actives use standard mandelic acid, which is typically not chirally correct. That doesn’t mean they’re bad, but it does mean that results may be less consistent. It also brings the possibility of a higher risk of irritation and they’re not always ideal for acne-safe routines.

If you’ve ever felt like your mandelic acid serum “should be working” but isn’t, this could be the reason. So don’t write off Mandelic acid in general if you’ve tried a non-chirally correct version before and didn’t get the results you hoped for.

The takeaway

Skincare is not just about ingredients, it’s about how your skin interacts with them, the delivery systems in place, and the quality of ingredient sourcing. Two products can both say “mandelic acid” and perform completely differently.

Chirally correct skincare is one of those details that can completely change your results.

If you feel like your current routine isn’t working or you’re stuck in a cycle of trying products that should help but don’t, this is exactly the kind of thing we look at together.

It’s never your skin that’s the problem, it’s that your products aren’t always designed to truly support it.
